making the work

Whether in my studio or occasionally in plein air, my paintings evolve organically. Initially, the lines, shapes, and composition are abstract in all aspects. The figural forms that sometimes appear emerge from the interlocking shapes. Once they’re identified, it’s difficult to see past them, and the layering and defining process begins. I push, pull, shift, and refine until my final mark.
